ON THE OCCASION OF THE EXHIBITION “WINDOW TO THE CLOUDS” BY MATTHEW LUTZ-KINOY
The poetry reading took place on the occasion of Window to The Clouds at Salon Berlin of Museum Frieder Burda, the Paris-based artist Matthew Lutz-Kinoy’s (*1984 in New York) first institutional solo presentation in Germany. “I have recently been interested in how symbols appear in artworks and in writing. Not only in representational figurative artwork – but also the symbols apparent in color, forms, materials even. And in this way, I found it interesting to relate systems of poetry into a logic of exhibition making”, so the artist. Kathy-Ann Tan and Matthew Lutz-Kinoy will discuss a work by Robert Duncan. As a departure point, they start with the first work in the current show “Window to The Clouds”, a site-specific sculpture of thousands of pompoms, titled after a book of poems by Robert Duncan, famed American poet and gay rights activist. Quinn Latimer and Dena Yago will read from their own work. The conversation develops around their work whose writing engages unique perspectives on the relationship to the reader and audience through the materiality of text. Their poems are brought into conversation with Essex Hemphill’s poetry who chronicled the experience of black gay men in America during the 80’s-90’s. These poets bring to light the space of potentiality that is based in a collective reading of history and a powerfully lived corporeality.
