In einer neunteiligen Serie führt Sie unsere Kuratorin Marta Dziewańska durch die Ausstellung «Alles zerfällt. Schweizer Kunst von Böcklin bis Vallotton» und erläutert die Idee hinter der Ausstellung sowie einzelne Werke.
Das Kunstmuseum Bern zeigt rund 200 Werke seiner Sammlung aus der Perspektive von Sigmund Freuds Text zu den drei narzisstischen Kränkungen des Menschen. Die umfangreiche Sammlungsausstellung zeigt neben zahlreichen Meisterwerken von Arnold Böcklin, Ferdinand Hodler, Albert Anker, Adolf Wölfli und Félix Vallotton auch Werke von bisher weniger beachteten Künstlerinnen wie Annie Stebler-Hopf oder Clara von Rappard.
Ausgangspunkt der Ausstellung ist Sigmund Freuds Schrift von 1917 zu den drei narzisstischen Kränkungen der Menschheit. Freud zufolge haben drei wissenschaftliche Entdeckungen das Selbstverständnis des Menschen grundlegend erschüttert: Das Kopernikanische Weltbild, Charles Darwins Evolutionstheorie und Freuds eigene Lehre des Unbewussten. Was Freud in seinem Aufsatz als narzisstische Kränkungen bezeichnet, ist die Einsicht, dass der Mensch weder Mittelpunkt des Universums noch Herrscher über die Natur und sein eigenes Bewusstsein ist.

The Kunstmuseum Bern is showing around 200 works from its collection from the perspective of Sigmund Freud’s text in which he speaks of three major humiliations of the human narcissism in the course of recent history. Alongside masterpieces by Arnold Böcklin, Ferdinand Hodler, Albert Anker, Adolf Wölfli and Félix Vallotton, the extensive exhibition of pieces from the collection also includes works by women artists who have so far received less attention, such as Annie Stebler-Hopf and Clara von Rappard.
The starting point for the exhibition is Sigmund Freud’s 1917 essay about the three humiliations of the human narcissism. According to Freud, three scientific discoveries have fundamentally shaken humanity’s understanding of itself: Copernican cosmology, Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and Freud’s own theory of the unconscious. What Freud describes in his essay as a narcissistic humiliation is the discovery that man is not the centre of the universe and rules neither over nature nor even over himself.
