For the latest edition of our Instagram Live Talk series, director Mateo Kries welcomed Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin from the Amsterdam based design studio Formafantasma. In their work, Formafantasma investigate the ecological, historical, political and social forces shaping the discipline of design today. This contextual approach is combined with a highly sensual use of materials, ranging from glass or volcanic lava up to electronic waste which led to their renown “Ore Streams” series (2017). Formafantasma’s recent exhibition “Cambio” at the Serpentine Gallery in London explored the cultural history of wood and was one of the most discussed design exhibitions of 2020. In the Live Talk, Formafantasma revealed inspirations and design approaches, discussed some of their past and future projects, and gave insights into the multitude of layers that define their work, ranging from material research up to global contexts and challenges of design in the 21st century.
