In his impulse lecture, art historian Dr. Bart Pushaw uses the settlement of Pannirtuuq (Pangnirtung) as an example to illuminate the complex art production in the Arctic of the 1930s. Featuring the artworks by the noted painters (of the Group of Seven) Lawren Harris and A. Y. Jackson, it is shown how their works romanticize the presence of the Inuit or erase their social and ecological displacement. This contrasts the everyday reality of Inuit peoples and the vibrant, contemporary modernism of their art.
