The American artist Kara Walker unveils never-before-seen drawings that grapple with race, gender, and violence.
Contemporary artist has shown her silhouetted depictions of plantation life in most of the world’s leading institutions. Her monumental fountain sculpture depicting the transatlantic slave trade, Fons Americanus, made global headlines and even an FKA Twigs’ music video. Now, Kunstmuseum Basel is revealing a lesser-known aspect of Walker’s prolific creative output: her drawings.
Shot in her New York studio and at Kunstmuseum Basel, this episode of Meet the artists sheds light on one of the most intimate facets of Walker’s oeuvre. „Kara Walker. A Black Hole Is Everything a Star Longs to Be“ throws open the doors to her personal archive that she has closely guarded for the past twentyeight years and presents more than 600 drawings from her studio. The Kunstmuseum Basel displays these treasures together with brand-new works like the provocative series of large-scale drawings of former President Barack Obama. This is the first extensive solo exhibition in Switzerland by the American artist. Presented in partnership with Nowness and Art Basel.
