Der Vortrag wird die Ursprünge und die Blütezeit der agronomischen Literatur nachzeichnen und ihre Entwicklung neben der Produktion von illustrierten Texten über „materia medica“ (d. h. hauptsächlich Kräuterbücher) und die Tacuina sanitatis untersuchen.
Während die Agronomie den Weg für eine intensive Nutzung der Natur ebnete, wurde das Studium der Materia Medica in erster Linie von der Neugierde und dem Geist der unentgeltlichen Erkundung bestimmt. Anhand einer Auswahl von Beispielen aus handschriftlichen und gedruckten Kräuterbüchern wird gezeigt, wie das uneigennützige Streben nach Wissen über die medizinischen und pharmazeutischen Eigenschaften von Pflanzen und Kräutern nicht nur Fachleute – wie Apotheker und Ärzte – beschäftigte, sondern auch Laien, weniger bekannte und marginale Persönlichkeiten, die dennoch eine bedeutende Rolle bei der Förderung des botanischen Wissens spielten.
Sabrina Minuzzi befasst sich mit diesem spannenden Thema und gibt einen tieferen Einblick in die Sonderausstellung Arcimboldo – Bassano – Bruegel. Die Zeiten der Natur, die bis zum 29. Juni 2025 im Kunsthistorischen Museum zu sehen ist!
The lecture will trace the origins and flourishing of agronomic literature, exploring its development alongside the production of illustrated texts on ‘materia medica’ (i.e. mainly herbals) and the Tacuina sanitatis.
While agronomy paved the way for intensive exploitation of nature, the study of materia medica was primarily driven by inquiry and curiosity, rooted in a spirit of gratuitous exploration. A selection of examples from both manuscript and printed herbals will illustrate how the disinterested pursuit of knowledge about the medicinal and pharmaceutical properties of plants and herbs engaged not only professionals – such as apothecaries and physicians – but also laypeople, lesser-known and marginal figures who nonetheless played a significant role in advancing botanical knowledge.
