Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840) und Johan Christian Dahl (1788–1857) gelten als die Protagonisten der nordischen Landschaftsmalerei zur Zeit der Romantik. Dresden bot das anregende Milieu, in dem die zwei großen Erneuerer zur Entfaltung und Blüte ihrer Kunst fanden. In dieser Wahlheimat lebten sie fast 20 Jahre im selben Haus und gaben ihre richtungweisenden Innovationen an eine Reihe von jüngeren Künstlern weiter.
Die Ausstellung „Dahl und Friedrich. Romantische Landschaften“ stellt erstmals herausragende Werke beider Künstler in einen Dialog. Gemeinsam mit dem Nationalmuseum Oslo, wo die umfangreichste Dahl-Sammlung zu Hause ist, werden sowohl Gemälde als auch Zeichnungen aus nationalem und internationalem Bestand präsentiert. Dresden wiederum beherbergt eine der größten Friedrich-Sammlungen. Als Prolog wird eine Einführung in die Anschauung und Aneignung der Natur im Schaffen von Dahl und Friedrich gezeigt.

Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840) and Johan Christian Dahl (1788–1857) are regarded as the leading figures of Nordic landscape painting in the Romantic era. The city of Dresden provided these two great innovators with a stimulating environment where their art could develop and flourish. Here, in their adopted homeland, they shared a house for almost 20 years, passing on their pioneering artistic approach to a generation of younger artists.
The exhibition will present both paintings and works on paper. It will be organized by The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo, which houses a major collection of Dahl’s works, and the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, which possess one of the largest collections of Friedrich paintings in the world. Selections from these exquisite collections will be supplemented by exceptional loans from other international institutions.
